Sustainable energy concepts
The core task in the field of energy and mobility is the development and further development of methods for the ecological-technical analysis and evaluation of new, innovative energy and mobility systems. The focus here is on solutions for the successful implementation of the energy transition, the mobility transition and sector coupling.
Current method developments deal with
- Evaluating the use of carbon dioxide as a carbon source for the synthesis of renewable fuels
- Environmental analysis of electricity supply with high temporal resolution, for example for the optimisation of intelligent electricity consumers
- Resource efficiency of future technologies - demand and criticality of rare and strategic raw materials
- Use of data science and business intelligence (BI) to support environmentally friendly product development in companies
Research Areas
The research results help decision-makers from industry and politics to better understand environmentally relevant influencing factors and interactions in complex systems. As a result, potential opportunities and risks can be identified in early development and decision-making phases and targeted measures and strategies can be derived. Current work includes technology assessments, system and scenario analyses in the following areas:
- Electromobility: Life cycle assessment of electrically powered cars and commercial vehicles - battery electric, plug-in hybrid and fuel cell vehicles
- Use of renewable energies in electricity generation, energy conversion and mobile and stationary energy storage solutions
- Alternative fuels and synthesis processes, power-to-gas and power-to-liquid
- Fleet analyses, mobility systems and intermodal mobility
- Energy generation
- Sector coupling - electricity, transport, industry, heating and cooling
-
Life cycle assessment and EcoDesign in the aviation sector
