Materials and Product Systems

Resource-efficient and environmentally friendly production

Life cycle assessment and environmentally friendly product development with a focus on innovative research and development in the areas of adaptive shells and structures, renewable raw materials, plastics and composites, packaging systems, recycling and energy cost sensitivity of materials.

Taking a Holistic View of Product Systems

High-performance plastics, rare metals, plant extracts, carbon fibres and composites - the mapping of special and innovative materials in life cycle assessments is the core competence of the Materials and Product Systems division. This includes the production of raw materials as well as processing into materials and components through to recycling or disposal at the end of life. The results support scientists in researching and developing the materials and processes of tomorrow and beyond.

Research Areas

A significant reduction in the excessive use of resources such as land, water or rare earths, as well as the drastic reduction of environmentally relevant emissions, is more than ever an imperative task in the research and development of new products. A life cycle assessment accompanying the development process makes it possible to address and specifically reduce the environmental impact associated with production, use and various recycling processes.

  • Land use and biodiversity
  • Plastics and composites
  • Chemistry and biotechnology
  • Recycling processes and recovery of raw materials
  • Adaptive shells and structures
