BioWert – Biodiversity assessment in complex value chains

Junior research group

Biodiversity impact assessment in life cycle assessments with GIS analyses, fuzzy logic and potential theory

The BioWert junior research group is an interdisciplinary research group that focusses on the topic of biodiversity in life cycle assessments and takes a holistic view of the effects of bio-based materials and energy sources. The topic of the junior research group concerns the interface between environmental management, landscape ecology and applied biodiversity conservation.

The aim of the research is to understand and evaluate the complex and multi-layered effects of products on biodiversity over entire product life cycles. The BioWert junior research group combines empirically based science, spatial data analysis on a global scale and expert knowledge. In this way, it addresses the challenges posed by the rapid loss of biodiversity and contributes to the protection of biodiversity through its current and future research.

Research focuses on topics such as

  • Detailed spatial assessment of the land use context
  • Spatial differentiation of the biodiversity assessment in the LCA
  • Regionalisation of impacts on biodiversity
  • Assessment of the impacts of different land use types
  • Impacts of different management intensities
