SFB-TRR 141 – Biological Design and Integrative Structures

Sonderforschungsbereich

In Transregio 141, a bio-inspired sustainability model and an evaluation system were developed and tested in sub-project C01 "The biomimetic promise".

The Transregional Collaborative Research Centre TRR 141, funded by the German Research Foundation DFG, is concerned with linking biology and architecture with the help of innovative methods for simulation and production. Close co-operation between interdisciplinary teams enables the development process to be carried out in accordance with the rules of biomimetic product development: The functionally important features of the biological systems are abstracted into a model that represents the respective properties under consideration and the underlying functional principles. This model serves as the basis for the simulation of the functional morphology and for the technical realisation.

The bionic promise: natural solutions as a concept generator for sustainable technology development in the construction sector

The project investigates whether biomimetic product development generates sustainable solutions and which prerequisites are necessary for this. To this end, a bio-inspired model of sustainability and an evaluation system based on it were developed and applied in the context of Transregio 141.
