Climate Adaption

Climate Adaptation measures in exterior and interior spaces

The less it is possible to protect the climate, the more effort is required to protect oneselves from the climate. While the containment of anthropogenic climate damage has been an integral part of global efforts for many years and the issue has accordingly been attracting attention in the public and in university education, the treatment of the future, already noticeable consequences of climate change remains of secondary importance. However, it is essential that both challenges, that of climate protection and that of climate adaptation, are addressed equally and mastered synchronously. In particular, the implementation of climate adaptation measures in university teaching represents an important role for current and future challenges. It contributes to a sustainable continuation of climate adaptation measures due to the multiplier function of universities.

Despite its urgency, the topic of climate adaptation is not yet strongly represented in the study structure of the University of Stuttgart. The goal of the project "MoKli" is therefore the implementation of climate protection as well as climate adaptation measures into the teaching structures of the university by creating an educational module with two courses on climate adaptation measures. One part of the course focuses on the consequences of climate change and the resulting structural adaptation measures in outdoor spaces. The other part focuses on structural adaptation measures at the building level and the corresponding consequences for the indoor climate. In each course, students learn software programs to independently investigate, evaluate and verify developed building solutions. By extending the theoretical knowledge transfer through practical exercises, students are encouraged to actively apply and reflect on what they have learned previously.
