Use of the resource wastewater to improve the urban climate through increased evaporation

Research Project to promote permanently irrigated green roofs.

In view of climate change and the increasing demand for water-sensitive urban development, multidisciplinary approaches to intensify urban greening with constant evaporative cooling even in long-lasting, hot dry periods are to be implemented for urban areas. Therefor the project investigates the development of a utilization concept of wastewater, which is used for irrigation and fertilization of green roofs. An absolute novelty is hierby the use of treated wastewater from decentralized wastewater treatment plants for the irrigation of urban vegetation. This increases evaporation and will be implemented, investigated and optimized in the project for different green roof systems.
